1. Belgian Malinois

A Belgian Malinois is a Belgian German Shepherd dog that goes by different names in different parts of the world. It is also known as a Belgian German Shepherd or a Beligian Malinois. As with most German Shepherds this dog has ears that wide and pointy, and a long snout.

The Belgiam Malinois makes an excellent security dog. They are used for home security, but they are also used in warehouses and government facilities. These dogs are hyper sensitive and hyper aware. When trained they are formidable and won’t let anything past them.

2. Giant Schnauzer

The Giant Schnauzer May not be the most obvious candidate for a security dog. They do not loot lean and fast like the German Shepherds. Instead they stand tall with a curly coat and look something like a poodle – but don’t let looks fool you, these dogs are formidable security assets.

The reason they make excellent security dogs is because they are bred for that specific purpose. These dogs are giant, strong, and fiercely loyal. They are loyal to the point of jealousy in some cases but this can be overcome with training classes.

3. Boxer

A boxer may not need any introduction. These large and formidable hounds make excellent pets as well as guard dogs and they’re a common site in parks and canal walks. A boxer is a dog of medium height, it is short haired and òriginates in Germany.

A boxer dog is like a mind reader. If someone is trying to steal something from you at close range or far off the boxer will notice and alert you. Although they look like fearsome dogs they are actually quite gentle and an excellent guard dog if you have kids.

4. Rottweiler

A rottweiler is the type of dog you might imagine when you think of a security guard dog. Famous the world over as guard dogs, these are medium to large black dogs with floppy ears and big teeth. They were originally bred in Germany to herd cattle.

Not surprisingly the rottweiler is an excellent guard dog, it has won its reputation for a reason. Although these dogs have a soft side that can be cultivated they tend towards guard and aggression. If you take on a rottweiler make sure you also invest in plenty of training books and lessons.

5. Doberman Pinscher

A Doberman Pinscher is a medium to large dog that is popular in North America but was developed in Germany. It has a long neck and front legs that it uses to stand tall and search the middle distance. It has small floppy ears and a short coiled tail.

If you have kids in your house and you want a Doberman guard dog make sure to get one as a puppy, that way they will understand their protection role innately. These dogs are formidable, fast, strong, with excellent stamina. They have no problems chasing down an intruder.

6. Bullmastiff

A Bullmastiff is a large breed of dog with a strong body and short snout. It is a short haired dog and was originally bred by gamekeepers and Country Manor owners. The dog was bred by crossing an English Mastiff with an Old English Bulldog which is now extinct.

Like Dobermans these dogs are best bought into the family as puppies, that way they know their roles from early on and become familiar with the children. These dogs are excellent at recognising their owners and remembering faces, one thing that makes them such great guard dogs.

7. German Shepherd

The German Shepherd was formerly called an Alsatian in the UK until 1977 when the name changed back. It is a German breed of dog with the appearance of a wolf. A long snout and large cone-like ears. These dogs are popular as pets and guard dogs.

The German Shepherd is an excellent all round guard dog. It has intelligence, loyalty, agility, and strength. They are not as formidable looking as dobermans and bullmastiffs, but they have power and strength when needed. They are also easily trained.
